Chapter Three
The rest of August was spent unpacking and putting away our belongings. I now had a redwood bureau set that I picked out in my room, and my bed was situated right across from the window. My floor had a plush dark violet rug and most of the furnishings(which I personally chose) were shades of dark purple, red or blue. The only thing that wasn't any of those colors were the walls, which were paneled with oak. Mom said the paneling was ugly, but I liked it. It went with the room. I had posters of Bon Jovi and Avril Lavigne and the Beatles on my walls. I like those musicians, but I also like A.F.I. and Metallica. I just didn't have any of their posters.
Snickers has her own bed next to mine. She spends most of her time in my room.
I had decided to take a walk one day with Snickers; I needed to get out of the house and see the rest of the neighborhood. There was a nice little park near my house; I'd seen it while we were driving here and thought it would be cool to take Snickers out for some exercise.
Snickers and I walked five blocks before I saw a small group of girls. They were all about my age, but the most noticeable was a tall, stick-thin blonde girl who was talking in a valley girl accent(Or at least, that's what it seemed like to me). I kept walking with my dog, and sipping the Slurpee I'd bought for myself. The blonde girl and her friends ran up to me.
"Hey! Hey stop!"
I turned around. "Yeah?"
The girl giggled(AAUUUUUGGGHH! Nails on a chalkboard!). "Are you new here?"
I rolled my eyes; this one was intelligent. "Yeah, I just moved from Brooklyn last week."
The girl looked puzzled. She turned to her friends. "Where's Brooklyn?"
Yep, I had a real winner here. "New York City." She didn't know Brooklyn? How stupid can one person be?!?!
The girl giggled again. "I might as well introduce myself. I'm Brittani Murphy, and these are my friends, Jessica Stanton and Hayley Freeley. And you are?"
"Audrey Taylor."
Brittani looked like a deer in headlights. 'I'll bet your eyes glow in the dark,' I thought.
Hayley, who looked like the only intelligent person there, said, "Oooh, nice dog!"
Snickers looked up. I patted her and said, "Yeah, I've had her for a year now."
Brittani looked bored. The attention wasn't on her. "What kind of dog is it?" she asked. I was liking this girl less and less with every word.
"She's a golden Labrador," I said. Brittani laughed.
"Aww, how cute. I have a purebred Pomeranian named Queenie, and a purebred Maltese named Cleo." she said pompously.
I smirked. "Aww, how cute." I said sarcastically, rolling my eyes. Brittani was not impressing me. She looked smart until she opened her mouth.
Brittani frowned slightly. "So what's your dog's name?"
"Her name is Snickers," I said proudly.
Brittani started laughing, as well as her friends.
"What kind of name is Snickers?" she said haughtily.
"What kind of names are Cleo and Queenie?!" I shot back. I couldn't believe this bitch was taunting me over a dog! That was enough of that. I turned around, said, "Come on, Snickers, we're going home," and marched back to my house. Brittani and her cronies were still laughing.
I was still pissed an hour later. How dare she?! How fucking dare she?! It wasn't that she teased Snickers, I could live with that, but it was the fact that she was so...high and mighty, like she thought she was better than me. She didn't seem like the type who was used to people with brains. 'Well, Brittani Murphy,' I thought sitting on my bed, 'get used to it, 'cause I'm gonna be here for a long time.'
